OAXACA wedding photographer in MEXICO – Photography in Mexico & Europe
Hi! I’m Antonio, a destination wedding photographer based in Mexico, and Oaxaca is one of the most visually and culturally rich places I work in.
Oaxaca sits in a high mountain valley in southern Mexico at an altitude of 1,500 meters, surrounded by the Sierra Norte and Sierra Sur ranges, and it is unlike any other Mexican city. The architecture of the historic center is built almost entirely from green cantera stone, a volcanic rock that absorbs light differently at every hour of the day, turning pale gold in the afternoon and deep amber at dusk. The food culture is arguably the most sophisticated in Mexico. The artisan traditions, weaving, pottery, mezcal, alebrijes, are still practiced in the villages surrounding the city in ways that feel entirely continuous with the pre-colonial past. And the Zapotec and Mixtec archaeological sites, Monte Albán above all, provide a visual context that gives every celebration held in this landscape an extraordinary sense of depth and place.
As a wedding destination, Oaxaca attracts couples who want something genuinely different. The venues here are not resort properties with event coordinators and beach chairs. They are colonial convents, private haciendas, mezcal distilleries, rooftop terraces above the zócalo, and boutique hotels housed in 16th-century buildings with inner courtyards and stone fountains. The scale is intimate by definition, and the atmosphere of every celebration is shaped by the city itself rather than by a catering package.
I specialize in blending editorial and documentary wedding photography, present throughout your day without ever getting in the way. I work both in digital and on film, and the quality of light in Oaxaca, that particular mountain clarity that comes from altitude and dry air and the warm green stone of the buildings, is exceptional for analog photography.
A significant number of the couples I work with in Oaxaca fly in from the United States and Canada. Oaxaca International Airport has direct connections from Mexico City, and an increasing number of direct routes from US cities are making the destination more accessible than ever. I’m experienced in working with international couples and making the planning process as smooth as possible regardless of where you’re based.
Whether you’re planning an intimate courtyard ceremony for twenty guests or a multi-day celebration that takes in the city, the valleys and the archaeological sites, I’d be honored to be there with you.
OAXACA on film — analog wedding photography
Oaxaca has a quality of light I have not encountered anywhere else in Mexico. The altitude creates a clarity and a sharpness that is entirely different from the warm diffusion of the coast. The green cantera stone absorbs and reflects light with a warmth and a depth that changes completely between morning and evening. On analog film, that translates into images of extraordinary richness: the texture of the stone, the deep shadows of the colonial arcades, the warm amber of the late afternoon on the rooftops and the courtyards, all of it rendered with a quality that feels genuinely painterly.
For me, film isn’t a stylistic choice made for trends, it’s a deliberate creative decision. The slower pace it demands, the intentionality it requires, produces images that feel crafted rather than captured. Images that age beautifully.
I offer both fully analog collections and film add-ons to digital coverage. If you’re curious about incorporating film into your Oaxaca wedding, just mention it when you get in touch.
Where to get married in OAXACA
Oaxaca’s venue scene is defined by its colonial architecture and its intimate scale. There are no resort ballrooms here, no beach clubs. What there is instead is an exceptional collection of historic properties, boutique hotels and private spaces that give every celebration a character of its own.
Casa Oaxaca is perhaps the most iconic address in the city for intimate celebrations, a boutique hotel and restaurant housed in a beautifully restored colonial mansion in the historic center. The courtyard, the rooftop terrace and the interiors produce images of extraordinary elegance. It suits elopements and very small celebrations where atmosphere and detail matter more than capacity.
El Camino Real Oaxaca occupies a former 16th-century convent, one of the most extraordinary buildings in Mexico. The stone cloisters, the arcaded courtyards, the chapel and the gardens create a setting of genuine historical depth that no purpose-built venue can replicate. For couples who want something grand and deeply rooted in Mexican history, it is the natural choice in Oaxaca.
Hacienda Los Laureles sits in the foothills above the city with views across the valley toward Monte Albán. The property combines colonial hacienda architecture with spa facilities and event spaces that suit celebrations of varying sizes. The mountain light here at golden hour, falling across the valley with the archaeological site visible in the distance, is genuinely extraordinary.
Tierra del Sol is a boutique property in the Etla Valley north of the city, set among olive trees and organic gardens with a more rural, open-air character than the venues in the historic center. It suits couples who want Oaxaca’s cultural depth with a more relaxed, countryside atmosphere.
Monte Albán itself, the great Zapotec city above the valley, can be arranged as a backdrop for portrait sessions and creative work outside of visiting hours, providing images of a scale and a historical resonance that exists nowhere else in Mexico.
For couples who want to incorporate the city more fully, the streets and markets of the historic center, the Mercado Benito Juárez, the Templo de Santo Domingo, the rooftops of the barrio de Jalatlaco, all offer extraordinary visual material for a wedding day that extends beyond the venue itself.
If you’re still choosing between venues or deciding whether Oaxaca is the right destination for your celebration, I’m happy to share what I know from having worked across the city and the valleys.

Frequently asked questions
01.
How would you describe your approach to wedding photography?
My approach blends documentary and editorial instincts. For most of your day I stay invisible, capturing real moments as they unfold. During portraits I guide you gently, making sure you look and feel your best without spending too long away from your guests.
02.
Do you shoot on film in Oaxaca?
Yes, and I love it. The mountain light of Oaxaca, clear, warm and rich at golden hour as it catches the green cantera stone of the historic buildings and the valley below, is exceptional for analog photography. I offer fully analog collections as well as film add-ons to digital coverage, just mention your interest when you get in touch.
03.
Can we meet or have a call before booking?
Absolutely. I’m always happy to jump on a video call to hear about your plans and answer any questions. It’s a great way to make sure we’re the right fit for each other before committing to anything.
04.
How far in advance should we book?
Most couples book around a year in advance, especially for peak season dates. I’d recommend reaching out as soon as you have a date in mind to check availability.

You’ll receive a preview gallery within 48 hours of your wedding. The full edited collection is delivered within two months.
