HOLBOX wedding photographer in Riviera Maya – Photography in Mexico & Europe
Hi! I’m Antonio, a destination wedding photographer based in Mexico, and Holbox is where many of the country’s most spectacular weddings happen.
Isla Holbox sits at the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, separated from the mainland by the Yalahau Lagoon and accessible only by ferry. There are no cars on the island, no high-rise hotels, no resort infrastructure in the conventional sense. What there is instead is an extraordinary quality of light, shallow turquoise water that stretches to the horizon, white sand so fine it squeaks underfoot, and a pace of life that makes every celebration feel genuinely unhurried. Holbox is where couples come when they want a destination wedding that feels nothing like a destination wedding. The venues here are small, characterful, and deeply rooted in the island’s atmosphere — Ser Casasandra, Las Nubes de Holbox, Villas Flamingos, the western beaches at Punta Coco where the sunset hits the lagoon from an angle that seems almost designed for photography.
I specialize in blending editorial and documentary wedding photography, present throughout your day without ever getting in the way. I work both in digital and on film, and the quality of light on Holbox, that particular softness that comes from shallow water reflecting a vast open sky, is among the most beautiful I have photographed anywhere in Mexico for analog photography.
A significant number of the couples I work with in Holbox fly in from the United States and Canada. Whether you’re coming from New York, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto or Vancouver, Holbox is accessible via Cancún International Airport followed by a transfer to the Chiquilá ferry terminal, a journey of around two and a half hours in total. I’m experienced in working with international couples and making the planning process as smooth as possible regardless of where you’re based.
Whether you’re planning an intimate barefoot ceremony for twenty guests or a small, carefully curated celebration at one of the island’s boutique properties, I’d be honored to be there with you.
HOLBOX on film — analog wedding photography
Holbox has a quality of light I have not found anywhere else in Mexico. The island sits between the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, and the shallow water on both sides creates a luminosity that wraps around everything. On analog film, that translates into images of extraordinary softness and warmth. The turquoise deepens, the whites of the sand glow, and the late afternoon light on the beach takes on a texture that feels genuinely otherworldly. For a place with as much natural beauty as Holbox, film is simply the right medium.
For me, film isn’t a stylistic choice made for trends, it’s a deliberate creative decision. The slower pace it demands, the intentionality it requires, produces images that feel crafted rather than captured. Images that age beautifully.
I offer both fully analog collections and film add-ons to digital coverage. If you’re curious about incorporating film into your Holbox wedding, just mention it when you get in touch.
Where to get married in HOLBOX
Holbox has a small but carefully curated selection of venues, each with a distinct character, and all of them share the same essential quality: an intimacy and a connection to the natural landscape that no larger destination can replicate.
Ser Casasandra is the most celebrated property on the island, an adults-only boutique hotel with an artistic soul. The architecture blends local materials with an almost meditative aesthetic, and the beachfront setting produces extraordinary light at golden hour. It’s an ideal choice for couples who want something intimate with a strong visual identity.
Las Nubes de Holbox sits on the northern shore with direct access to the beach and a palapa restaurant that doubles naturally as a ceremony and reception space. The open-air structure, warm wood tones, and uninterrupted sea views make it one of the most photogenic settings I’ve worked in on the island.
Villas Flamingos offers a quieter, more residential feel, a collection of bungalows nestled among tropical gardens, steps from the water. It suits elopements and very small celebrations particularly well, where the priority is atmosphere over capacity.
Punta Coco is located at the western tip of the island, away from the village, and offers a level of seclusion that is rare even by Holbox standards. Sunset ceremonies here are genuinely extraordinary, with the light hitting the lagoon from an angle that seems almost designed for photography.
If you’re still in the process of choosing a venue, I’m happy to share what I know from having worked across all of them.
